Collaboration VU and Deloitte

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and Deloitte formalized their intention on collaboration for the further development of the Care robot. During the collaboration additional steps will be taken in the development of the prototype known as Alice 2.0. The aim is a robotic solution for health care, which is based on the earlier developed robot and software in the VU research group SELEMCA, led by Johan Hoorn and Elly Konijn, which can help in the prevention of loneliness amongst elderly people. Good coverage of AIMM Therapeutics and the Amsterdam biotech community in GEN
Recently a delegation of English biotech journalists visited the Dutch biotech community. After their visit  they published an article in GEN, Genetic Engineering & Biotechnolgy News. The Amsterdam UMC - location AMC spin-off AIMM Therapeutics was profiled as a promising Dutch biotech company.

New collaboration between Amsterdam universities to support starters

A new collaboration between the Amsterdam universities has been set up to support students and researchers wanting to start their own business. On December 17, UvA, VU, HvA, and Amsterdam UMC signed a stakeholder agreement with university incubator ACE to collectively support spin-off companies. ACE supported over 150 startups from Amsterdam universities in the past five years, but there is still an incredible amount of hidden opportunities.  Formalizing the collaboration between ACE and all five universities increases ACE’s capacity to organize supporting programs on all city campuses and to recruit talent. AML patients receive cancer drug DCP-001

DCprime (spin-off Amsterdam UMC - VUmc) announces first patient dosed in phase 2 ADVANCE-II study with DCP-001 in patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This administration marks the official start of the phase 2 study in the ADVANCE-II study. A total of 20 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rare form of leukemia, participate in this study. A recently completed phase I study showed that the cancer drug DCP-001, a vaccine based on dendritic cells, is generally safe and capable of triggering an anti-cancer immune response in patients with AML. RVO instruments to support startups

The Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RvO) has a wide range of instruments to support startups and scale-ups in their growth. These instruments range from advice on intellectual property to financing innovation, advice on applying for Horizon2020, innovation missions and matchmaking events. The information is now available via www.RVO.nl/startups.

Pitch event with social and sustainable start-ups (19 December)


Be inspired, talk about the challenges of these social entrepreneurs and expand your network. Since September, a group of enthusiastic alumni has been working to strengthen and innovate business models for social enterprises in Amsterdam. At this closing event the start-ups will pitch achieved successes and a challenge for the audience to get to work on. There is a jury of social entrepreneurs, the city of Amsterdam and teachers entrepreneurship, so plenty of opportunities to expand your network in the start-up scene! Read more.

 
ACE Explore: Entrepreneurship in Life & Earth Sciences (23 & 30 January)
Are you curious about entrepreneurship but do not have a concrete startup idea yet? ACE presents an immersive two-day entrepreneurship program for students and researchers in collaboration with Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) and Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED). For MSc, PhD students or faculty of Life & Earth Sciences (SILS/IBED), or anyone else who is interested in entrepreneurship in sciences. To participate, it is not required to have a startup idea, just come with an open mind! Read more and application.

 
IXA organizes various workshops during HvA Research Day (28 January)


Are you interested in doing research at the HvA, are you working as a researcher or working together with HvA researchers? Then come to the first edition of the HvA Research Day on Monday 28 January. Experts from IXA provide a number of workshops.
During the workshop intellectual property: protect your idea! business developer Ronald Mooijer and legal counsel Klaas de Vries will give insight into the process. Grant advisors Maren Pannemann and Marcel Kloosterman share everything you want (and need) to know about research grants. Bart van Grevenhof of Amsterdam Venture Studios Amstelcampus sketches the trajectory of research into (student) entrepreneurship.

Connecting research and education to the climate agreement (29 January)
On Tuesday 29 January Amsterdam Green Campus organizes a symposium in which students and researchers show how they are shaping the transition to the sustainable society of tomorrow. This is done on the basis of four different tables. The results of a morning session in which experts are brought together are presented in an afternoon symposium. Top speakers in the various fields will reflect on the results. This symposium is for everyone who wants to understand how our transition task translates into chemistry, agriculture and society.

SAM Application fights loneliness, selected for the Startup in Residence Programme Amsterdam

Meaningful social contact is the slogan of SAM Application. Elena Köstler and her team are developing a mobile app to combat loneliness among young adults (18-35). They want to bring people together offline via an online platform. Demonstrator Lab has helped Elena and her team in developing their app. Elena: “The D-lab is not only an office space where you can start prototyping, find first customers and grow your idea to a company. The D-lab is also a vibrant startup & research community where you feel at home and understood. We couldn’t be more thankful that we are allowed to be a part of this”. Read more.
 
Entrepreneurship teaching cases SRXP and Tony Chocolonely available
Monday 10 December the Tony’s Chocolonely and fintech start up SRXP teaching cases were presented for an audience of teachers and entrepreneurs. During his presentation of the SRXP case professor Sustainable Entrepreneurship at VU Amsterdam, Enno Masurel, focused on the development from student start up to a growing and expanding company. While Maarten Hogenstijn researcher Social Entrepreneurship at HvA, focused with the Tony’s Chocolonely case on transparency in value chain, the companies organizational culture and how they tell and sell Tony’s story. Demonstrator projects successful with Take-off valorisation grants

Several Demonstrator Lab projects have received an award for a feasibility study or early phase trajectory within the NWO TTW Take-off program. D-Lab helps enterprising students and researchers to turn their ideas into tangible products and services.

The Meta-grip, a tool for climbers, and Fitsurance, with tailor-made lifestyle advice on physical exercise and nutrition, are able to do a feasibility study with the grant. Scitodate, a Big Data and AI company, received a start-up loan to further develop their new company.

Findest and Scitodate jointly received an Mkb subsidy

Findest and Scitodate have been awarded Mkb-innovatiestimulering Regio en Topsectoren (MIT) to jointly develop JARVLIS, an AI engine for Scientific Natural Language Inference. Both companies are D-Lab alumni and are now based in Amsterdam Venture Studios at VU Campus.

Demonstrator Lab project GlucoEasy wins NWO Open Mind funding of € 50,000
GlucoEasy has won the NWO Open Mind funding of €50,000. The Open Mind grants are awarded by NWO to technologies with a surprisingly societal application.

Diabetics should no longer have to measure their glucose levels by pricking blood. It can perhaps be a lot more comfortable, for example by measuring glucose levels in sweat. Dr. Elizabeth von Hauff, associated with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, has won an Open Mind grant for that idea. Read more.

Record amount of funding available for new research
In 2018 various projects within Amsterdam UMC have received funding through the PPS Allowance from Top Sector Life Sciences & Health to stimulate R&D in public private partnerships. For 2019 a record amount for new projects will be available. For Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc this is almost €2 million and for Amsterdam UMC, location AMC this is €5,5 million. This funding is a financial instrument to help consortia consisting of research organisations, knowledge institutes, companies, and health foundations to realise their innovative ideas. The funding per project varies from 100-200k€ in VUmc and from 300-100k€ in AMC. The call for projects from AMC is still open until January 21. For VUmc the deadline was December 17.
 
Top Sector Life Sciences & Health (LSH) supports innovative research and development realised by public-private partnerships (PPPs) of the Dutch LSH sector. The Top Sector brings together stakeholders in a shared, consolidated innovation infrastructure. By means of PPP Allowance (formerly known as TKI-Allowance), the Top Sector provides a financial instrument to help consortia consisting of research organisations, knowledge institutes, companies, and health foundations to realise their innovative ideas.
 
ASIF’s first investment: emerging fintech startup, Dyme
ASIF is a venture capital fund that invests exclusively in startups founded by students or recent graduates in Amsterdam. They recently made their ever first investment in Dyme, a fast growing fintech startup and participant in the ACE-incubation program. Dyme gives a user direct insight into his or her fixed costs by means of a secure link to his bank account. Within the application, unwanted subscriptions can be terminated with one click. It is also possible to switch to better alternatives. Dyme will use ASIF's investment to make the application available throughout the Netherlands. Read more.

 
ERC Consolidator Grant awarded to four UvA researchers


The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded prestigious Consolidator Grants to anthropologist Shanshan Lan, legal expert Benjamin van Rooij, computational linguist Raquel Fernández and medical biologist/data expert Colin Russell. The grants, awarded to individual researchers, are worth about 2 million euros each. Read more.
 
VIVA400 awards were presented to the most inspiring and successful women
Thursday November 15th, the VIVA400 awards were presented to the most inspiring and successful women in the Netherlands. Scientist Charlotte Teunissen was awarded in the category “Knappe Koppen”. She is the first woman in Europe to be appointed professor of neurochemistry at the Amsterdam UMC in 2018. Her research focuses on the search for substances in cerebrospinal fluid and blood that can indicate a disease. Within a year, Charlotte expects to bring the first blood test that proves Alzheimer's disease to the market. Read more.


Student Gabrielle Claushuis was awarded a Visionista award. She received the prize for the biggest up-and-coming talent for her app Mygappie, a tool against street intimidation. Gabrielle, who studies Communication at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, won € 10,000 in media value. Read more.


 
Guide to probiotics wins James Lind Award 2018
The 'Guide to probiotics for the prevention of antibiotic-related diarrhea' by TNO and ARTIS-Micropia wins the award in the 'application' category. VU microbiologist Remco Kort received this science prize Friday 23 November. "The practical guide to probiotics is a nice bridge between science and practice. This can help raise awareness about the benefits of probiotics in antibiotic use among doctors. The good overview is pre-eminently relevant for practice.", according to the jury. Read more.
