|
VUmc spin-off raises 16 million in funding round |
Lava Therapeutics, a spin-off from VUmc, founded by oncologist Hans van der Vliet, raised € 16 million for the development of experimental anti-cancer drugs. It is one of the biggest investment rounds this year for a non-listed biotech company. The company develops bispecific antibodies for the control of cancer. The new capital will enable Lava Therapeutics, among other things, to make its most important candidate medicines suitable for testing on patients. Read more.

Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence officially launched |
Science and business in the Netherlands are joining forces in the field of artificial intelligence. The Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI) will be officially launched at Amsterdam Science Park. The first lab within ICAI is a partnership with Ahold Delhaize. ICAI is focused on the joint development of AI technology through industry labs with the business sector, government and knowledge institutes. Read more. |

At the Allard Pierson Museum on Thursday 24 May, academic, business and public representatives met over dinner to discuss the theme of “Trusting Data on the Blockchain”. The Keynote speech was delivered by Balázs Bodó PhD, founder of the Blockchain&Society Policy Research Lab, Institute for Information Law, UvA. The Barlaeus dinners aim to build cross-sectoral dialogues among researchers, profit and non-profit organisations and government. With these dinners IXA UvA hopes to establish new possibilities for collaboration opportunities between the University of Amsterdam and third parties. Read more. |

Finalists Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award presented |
The finalists for the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award and the nominations for the Impact Award are presented.
Innovation Award The jury, led by Barbara Baarsma, selected five finalists for the Innovation Award from all submissions from the Amsterdam knowledge and research institutes. The innovations and new technologies offer innovative solutions for a wide range of social issues.
The winners will be announced during the festive finals on Tuesday, June 19. The finalists will pitch their idea to a professional jury and the public. The expert jury, consisting of representatives from industry and the Amsterdam knowledge institutes, will take into account the innovativeness, feasibility and fulfillment of market needs. The finalists have a chance of winning the top prize of € 10.000.

Impact Award This year, the Impact Award will also be presented for the first time to researchers who have made an important contribution to society. For this award, researchers were nominated from the Amsterdam knowledge institutions and the jury nominated six researchers. On 19 June the Impact Award will be awarded in two categories: alpha/gamma and beta/life sciences.

ACE Incubator was named #1 Incubator by Emerce100 in the category “Venture”.
In its five years of existence, ACE has helped more than 100 projects go from initial concept to startup. Boer: “We are a university incubator. That means that we support researchers and students of all Amsterdam-based knowledge institutes when they venture out from their research to start a company.” Read more.

AMC and VUmc are organizing a lunch presentation of GSK about their DPAC program (Discovery Partnerships with Academia). GSK has developed DPAC to translate new therapeutic ideas into medicines that benefit patients. UvA researcher Birte Forstmann awarded prestigious Proof of Concept (PoC) grant |
The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant to Birte Forstmann, professor of Neuroimaging in Cognitive Neuroscience at the UvA. Forstmann is one of fifty recipients awarded a €150,000 grant. The grant, which is only awarded to researchers that previously obtained an ERC award, is intended to explore business opportunities, prepare patent applications or verify the practical viability of scientific concepts. Forstmann received the grant for her proposal to create an atlas of the human subcortex. Read more.
