UvA and Bosch launch joint lab for research into deep learning


Artificial intelligence is poised to fundamentally change our world: in future, machines and devices will be capable of autonomously learning from experience and acting on this basis. The foundation for this is deep learning. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Bosch will cooperate closely in this field by partnering in Delta Lab (Deep Learning Technologies Amsterdam). Ten PhD students and postdoctoral fellows will conduct research at Delta Lab, which will be located at Amsterdam Science Park. Read more.

 
Investment for Caelus Health

AMC spin-off Caelus Health has secured €2.5 million in a Series A investment round, enabling the company to advance its pipeline of microbiota-based products for early intervention in cardio-metabolic disease. Read more.

AMC spin-off PacingCure



Recently a number of spin offs of AMC, VUmc, UvA, HvA and VU were established. One of them is PacingCure, a spin-off of AMC and an Amsterdam-based biotech company that focuses on the development of clinically applicable biological pacemaker therapies. To resolve some of the complications of electronic pacemakers, such as the limited battery lifetime, resulting in re-implantation, and the absence of direct interaction with the nervous system, which does not accelerate the heart rate by effort or emotion, PacingCure has developed a biological pacemaker to overcome these and other shortcomings. Successful Innovation Tour at the Amsterdam Science Park
Several entrepreneurs from various companies, ranging from Linde gas to Vintisit and Kisuma chemicals to V.O. patents, visited the Amsterdam Science Park on March 23 on the Innovation Tour. The tour was organised by Innovatielink in collaboration with IXA and Innovation Lab Chemistry Amsterdam. Read more.


 
Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award, Wednesday 21 June 2017


On June 21, 2017 the festive finale of the 12th edition of the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award will be presented. This prize is awarded to the most innovative scientific idea of Amsterdam. There is a large variety in entries. They stem from all areas, of medical devices to psychological domains.

The jury, chaired by Mirjam van Praag, Professor of Entrepreneurship at University of Amsterdam and Copenhagen Business School will then award the winner 2017 out of ten finalists. It promises to be an inspirational afternoon full of innovative ideas.

Prior to the festive award final, researchers and students present their ideas to entrepreneurs who are keen to discover more about the latest research developments and innovations. New director IXA VU-VUmc

As of April 10, Bart Klijsen was appointed as director of IXA VU-VUmc. Bart has been working as business developer since 2006.

Valorisation visualised
On Thursday April 13th, the unveiling of a special portrait series of valorising researchers took place. With this portrait series, IXA wants to exhibit the valorisation of research in an original way. Fourteen researchers, working at UvA, HvA, AMC, VU and VUmc, have been photographed by Fred van Diem, outside the setting of their research lab or college hall, using metaphors to visualize their ideas, technologies and research results. Symposium TIFN - Maintaining Oral Health, 11 May (ACTA)
This symposium will bring together scientists and clinicians from various fields and disciplines. The most recent findings on how different factors shape the microbe-host-ecosystem and how specific host-microbe interactions ensure stability of the human microbiota will be presented.
We will discuss how novel knowledge on the oral microbiota, as well as insights from microbiota on different parts of the human body, can be exploited for the benefit of our oral health.

Network Institute – Science meets business, Thursday 18 May (VU)
Together with IXA VU & VUmc, The Network Institute organizes a Science meets Business session between research, industry and public organisations. Purpose of the meeting is to strengthen the collaboration between researchers and businesses and (semi) government in realising concrete innovative cooperation projects. For promising collaborations the Network Institute offers three research vouchers with a value of € 5,000. each.
Examples of topics researchers want to explore with companies are Linked open data, crowd sourcing methods, visualisation, self-replicating and evolving robots. Participating organisations are also invited to bring in their research and innovation questions.
 

What societal changes occur due to the introduction of new digital technologies? And what societal problems can digital technologies solve?

Breakfast workshops on valorisation
IXA is organising a new series of workshops in the form of breakfast sessions on various valorisation topics. The breakfast workshops are open to all scientists from AMC, HvA, UvA, VU, VUmc and NWO Institutes. Participation is free of charge and breakfast will be served. The workshops are very practical and aimed to get you started immediately. Read more.
 
 
How to collaborate with external partners, Thursday 11 May (VU campus)

You have interesting research results or a great new idea, and you hope they can benefit society. To bring them to societal use, often a company has to take interest. But how do you know your results are interesting for a company? What does a company need to be willing to invest in further research and bring it to the market?  In this workshop you will meet valorisation experts. They will give you an overview of what industry is looking for, and how you can prepare yourself to enter into dialogue with industry.

How to finance your idea, Thursday 18 May (Science Park)

From valorisation grants to collaborating with companies
In this workshop we provide an overview of the financing possibilities in the different stages of the valorisation process. We are going to discuss the various types of valorisation grants and funds.
The utilisation paragraph will also be discussed. And we will cover other forms of financing, like crowdfunding and collaborating with a company. What is a company looking for and what are important criteria for them to collaborate?

Intellectual Property and Research Contracts, Thursday 15 June (VU campus)
What should you take into account in collaborations with an external partner? What do you need to settle in a contract? Who is authorised to sign and should Intellectual Property (IP) always be included in a contract? Awarded grants

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded an Advanced Grant to theoretical physicist Jean-Sébastien Caux, clinical psychologist Merel Kindt, and mathematical psychologist Eric-Jan Wagenmakers.
An Advanced Grant amounts to a total of 2.5 million euros for each project and is awarded for the scientific excellence of both researcher and research proposal. Read more.
