Whom do I trust my medical records?

UvA and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., to start research lab

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), global leader in next-generation mobile technologies, are jointly starting a research lab. The lab will undertake research projects investigating state-of-art machine learning techniques for processing sensory data including image recognition on mobile and embedded systems.

One step closer to renewable fuels




The development of renewable fuels is brought one step closer through the findings of researchers F. Brouwer and Hung-Cheng Chen. The researchers have found a new method for artificial photosynthesis. Since photosynthesis is the ultimate source of energy for biofuel production, this brings us another step closer to the availability of renewable fuels. Read more

 
Five vouchers for research collaborations Network Institute

The VU Network Institute awarded five research-business collaboration proposals with a voucher of
€ 5.000 each. Businesses-research matches were made with 2CoolMonkeys, Konnektid, Akvo.org, ETCBC and Eigen Werk. The vouchers equal approximately one month of research, during which companies and researchers work together on the realization of a project, product or service.

Launch research E-nose in the doctor’s office




AMC and Lung Fund are testing a new version of the electronic nose among 3000 patients. Just 'blow' at the doctor and instantly know whether you have a lung disease and determine the appropriate treatment. This is closer than you think. The electronic nose, or e-nose, "smells" a lung disease within a minute. The study "E-nose in the doctor’s office" will start September 8. In cooperation with the Longfonds, AMC will launch a large-scale test of this e-nose (Spiro Nose) especially for the doctor’s office and hospitals in the Netherlands. The study was made possible by a contribution from the VriendenLoterij. Read more (in Dutch)

Breakfast workshops on valorisation

IXA is organising a new series of workshops in the form of breakfast sessions on various valorisation topics. The breakfast workshops are open to all scientists from AMC, HvA, UvA, VU, VUmc and NWO Institutes. Participation is free of charge and breakfast will be served. How to valorise successfully

In this workshop we will go through the entire valorisation process; from the starting point to the further development of the idea, the organisation around the valorisation process, the legal aspects and identifying your network.

Two projects of VU have received an STW Take-off grant


Two VU projects have received a STW Take-off grant of € 40,000 for a feasibility study: De PestPlotter (VU) of Jeroen Pronk, and Digital Interactive Drawing (VU) of Sander Begeer. With a feasibility study of Take-off academic entrepreneurs gain time and resources to explore if their plan or pilot is technically and commercially feasible for knowledge utilization. Jeroen Pronk will develop a digital, user-friendly diagnostic instrument, the Pestplotter, to support schools in selecting an appropriate anti-bullying program.  Sander Begeer will develop the Digital Interactive Drawing Test which can be used in the identification of possible autism in children and may contribute to the diagnostic process.

New Call Take-off program

The financial instrument Take-off is open again for new applications. Take-off is an NWO program to stimulate economic activity and entrepreneurship at Dutch universities and research institutes. It may involve product, process, healthcare and service innovation in the broadest sense of the word, in all scientific fields (science / technology, life sciences and humanities / social).

The Take-off program has two components: feasibility studies (phase 1) and early stage projects (phase 2). Application for both parts are via STW and are possible until September 28, 2015, 17:00. Read more (in Dutch)

Get in the Ring Amsterdam

On September 24th the eight most promising startups from Amsterdam and other Dutch cities will battle in front of investors, fans and top entrepreneurs in the Local Amsterdam Finale of Get in the Ring. Get in the Ring is one of the biggest startup pitching competitions - ‘the Olympics for Startups’ - taking place in over 64 countries worldwide and giving the startups a global podium from which to connect with investors and create a fan base. Get in the Ring Amsterdam is organized by ACE VLab and Ernst & Young.

Scyfer received € 217,000 to launch a medical image analysis platform



Scyfer (an UvA-affiliated company and part of Startup Delta en ACE Venture Lab) was awarded a € 217,000 grant by an e-health accelerator program FICHe that selected Scyfer out of 300 European entries. According to the startup’s founders, its smart algorithm technology provides a breakthrough in the automatic pattern recognition of medical images, improving the quality of healthcare and making it cost and time efficient. With this funding Scyfer plans to launch its medical images data analysis platform into the eHealth market. Read more
