On 29 September Bart van Rosmalen gave his inaugural public lecture. He was formally installed as Professor Art and Professionalistion at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. The professorship published several outputs on this occassion:

From 12-16 September the ICMC2016 was succesfully hosted by HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and Gaudeamus Muziekweek at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.

HKU contributes to National Research Agenda
|
On 25 August the The Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences presented their strategic agenda for 2016-2020: Research with Impact. HKU University of the Arts contributed with the best practice If you're not there, where are you?, a research project on the visualisation of children's absences during epileptic attacks by HKU's Professorship Performative Processes.

Arts without Borders
|
At the Arts without Borders conference (19-22 October) in Helsinki, Bart van Rosmalen (Prof. Art and Professionalisation), Nirav Christophe (Prof. Performative Processes) and Anouk Saleming (lecturer and researcher at HKU) will present Showing is Sharing: Interdisciplinarity as Dialogue PART 1 and run the workshop Interdisciplinarity as Dialogue PART 2 on 19 October. Tet Koffeman (Course leader of HKU Musician 3.0) will present with HKU alumnus Guido Keijzer the (design) process of a unique bachelor degree in the subprogramme Learning Environments for Creativity and Innovation on 22 October.

Call for contributions Fresh Perspectives
|
The next edition of IETM's Fresh Perspectives series focuses on designing theatrical mixed reality experiences. IETM has invited Joris Weijdom, senior lecturer and researcher at the Professorship of Performative Processes at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, as a curator and writer of this issue. The deadline for submission is 24 October 2016.

Succesful SIA proposal
|
SIA Take-Off supports knowledge-driven entrepreneurship. HKU University of the Arts Utrecht has been awarded a grant in this regulation for Real Violin, a composition tool that uses an intelligent sampler that selects the right samples based on the notes and playing styles written on a score. The award will allow Prolody Inc. (owned by HKU Music and Technology alumni) to conduct a feasability study.

From the political arena to a digital playground
|
A selection of the most inspiring research projects by HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and Utrecht University was showcased to the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (COREPER) during their visit to Utrecht on May 20th. The showcase was set up at HKU Expertise Centre for Creative Technologies, that is at the forefront of crossover cooperation. HKU Expertise Centre for Research and Innovation supported the event.

IRIS trial results
|
Before summer the IRIS project conducted a clinical trial. The first scientific results show a significantly measurable reduction in stress levels for participants and a change in coping styles. On the basis of these remarkable results, proposals for further research are being prepared.

VS games 2016 conference
|
David Crombie (HKU University of the Arts Utrecht) and Gloria Gomez (University of Southern Denmark) presented the paper Bridging Design Prototypes in the Development of Games for Formal Learning Environments. The paper proposes to use Bridging Design Prototypes as part of serious games methodologies, to undertake studies and explorations in interaction design of novel products for novel practices in real educational settings. David Crombie also chaired a session on Virtual World Experiences, where Maja Pivec from FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences, a JamToday partner, also presented her work.

Succesful CREA Summer Academy 2016
|
From 4-16 July HKU University of the Arts Utrecht hosted a succesful second edition of CREA Summer Academy. By creating five start-up teams with 24 students with 11 nationalities to develop the best innovative and customer-fit business idea they can. In the process they were taught a variety of subjects, gained advice from experts and coaches and researched their ideas. The two winning teams will present their ideas at the 2016 CREA Summer Academy Business Idea Contest, at SMAU in Milan on 26 October.

For the love of maps
|
Educational publisher Blink wants to distinguish itself in the educational field and works with HKU University of the Arts Utrecht to develop new innovative methods through a combination of research and user-centred design. This has led to two new concepts that will teach children how to read maps in a playful way.

GameBiz presents Space for Beautiful Mistakes
|
After two years of intensive exchange of knowledge and expertise, the GameBiz Consortium published the handbook A Space for Beautiful mistakes. In the ERASMUS+ GameBiz project, HKU University of the Arts and partner institutions explored innovative ways of combining education and entrepreneurship at an institutional level to benefit students and start-up companies alike. The main findings from these exchanges are synthesised in the handbook.

EU Design Days
|
The EU Design Days are organised by the ERRIN WG on Design & Creativity and bring together different stakeholders to address critical issues in design policy and research. This year one of the main topics is 'Design Thinking for Public Sector Innovation and Regional Development’. HKU University of the Arts Utrecht has worked with the Design Faculty of Politecnico Milano on Design for Rural Spaces and this was discussed during the event.

ICT Proposers' Day 2016
|
HKU University of the Arts attended the EC Proposers Day event on 26 and 27 September under the Slovakian EU Presidency. This bi-annual event focussed on the Horizon2020 Work Programme 2016-2017 in the field of Information & Communication Technologies. It offered a unique opportunity to build quality partnerships with European academics, researchers, industrial stakeholders, SMEs and government actors. HKU took part in networking sessions covering aspects of interaction design, the creative industries and cultural co-operation.
