VUvereniging, the VU Association founded 1879 awarded SERVUS a 2-years project ‘We Shall Overcome’.
The project aims to strengthen the VU historical identity through 4 valorization actions. The actions originate and build on the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King jr. On October 20th 1965 MLK received an honorary doctorate degree for his courageous non-violent fight for social justice and civil rights. The first ‘We Shall Overcome’ action involves interviews with VU alumni who have met with dr. Martin Luther King jr. at VU in 1965. These interviews come on top of an earlier MLK interview series with VU Alumni

Subsequently, a MLK Masterclass will be organized for VU researchers and lecturers. The purpose of this Masterclass is to implement MLK's legacy in current research and educational curricula to serve 21st C generations to come. Research and educational issues such as cultural diversity, underprivileged societal groups e.g. newcomers, poor and elderly people, freedom of speech, and bullying in the (online) workplace will be aligned with MLK legacy. During an international symposium the major project findings will be highlighted. Web visibility will support knowledge sharing and sustainability of project findings. We are grateful for this generous empowerment of SERVUS by VUvereniging.

Sanne Nijs wins SBE docentalentprijs 2019
It is our pleasure and honor to congratulate Sanne Nijs (department of Management and organization) with winning the Award SBE DocenTalentprijs 2019. Every year, the Faculty Student Council initiates this Award. This is a challenging task, as the School of Business and Economics has many different programs and many good teachers that are committed to delivering high quality as well as an excellent student experience.

This experience moves beyond sharing knowledge and focusses on sparking interest and engagement with students. Our students are grateful for those teachers and this award is a tribute to those who stand out in delivering on both quality and experience. The various program committees who represent both students and staff were asked to nominate candidates and a jury consisting of program directors as well as student representatives evaluated the nominations.

For 2018 – 2019, the Educational Awards theme was ‘looking further’, and contributions to this theme were also expressed in the nominations. After careful consideration, the jury chose Sanne Nijs as the best lecturer of SBE 2019! As one of the new and younger teachers of the School she has made a great entrance and distinguished herself through her devotion and passion. Her multidisciplinary background of educational sciences, HRM, and Business economics provide her a solid basis for teaching. Her teaching methods, patience, kindness, willingness for students to perform to their best potential, and the fact that she incorporates real-life challenges in all her courses make her courses feel relevant to the real world and forward-looking, which is highly appreciated by both the expert jury members as well as the student judges.
