Announcement finalists of Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2016

The finalists for the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2016 are selected. The jury, chaired by Alexander Rinnooy Kan, had the difficult task to select ten finalists from all entries of the Amsterdam universities and research institutes. Innovations and new technologies offer breakthrough solutions for a variety of social issues. On Thursday May 26, the winner of the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award will be announced during the festive award ceremony. The afternoon is dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Science meets Business program

This year we take the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award to the another level with the introduction of the Science & Business Program.  Prior to the festive award ceremony on Thursday May 26, researchers and students present their ideas to entrepreneurs who are keen to discover more about the latest developments and innovative ideas. Would you like to have a unique and exclusive opportunity to meet with the cream of the crop of researchers and students, and hear all about their brilliant ideas at an early stage?

Then register for the Science & Business Program. Based on the strategy of your own company, we will try to find an exclusive match for you with one or more of the participants. The afternoon will be opened by Alderperson Economic Affairs of the city of Amsterdam Kajsa Ollongren.

Audience award – Online voting

Prior to the festive finale of the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award you can vote online for your favorite idea on our website from May 9th at 9:00 AM untill May 25th at 6:00 PM. On May 26th the winner of the Audience Award will be announced and awarded with EUR 5.000.-.

University of Amsterdam licenses novel molecules for hydrogen generation to French company PorphyChem
IXA office UvA-HvA (Innovation Exchange Amsterdam) recently licensed the rights for the commercialisation of novel molecules for hydrogen generation to the French company PorphyChem. Researchers at the UvA's Van ’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) developed the synthesis of these so-called 'metalloporphyrins', which can enable sustainable sunlight-driven hydrogen production from water.

Immunexpress and AMC collaborate on development of sepsis-related biomarker panels

Immunexpress Inc. entered a collaboration with the Academic Medical Center (AMC) at the University of Amsterdam to characterize and clinically evaluate sepsis and sepsis-related biomarker signatures of the host response. This four-year collaboration with AMC’s Prof. Dr. Tom van der Poll and his team will leverage the informatics expertise of both groups to further the clinical evaluation of proprietary biomarker signatures, as well as additional RNA, protein and epigenetic biomarkers. The collaboration is designed to advance Immunexpress’s commercialization of a pipeline of host response products tailored for improved management of patients with sepsis and suspected of sepsis. VU closes license agreement with ENPICOM for the computational biology method ConBind
ENPICOM has acquired a license from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to use ConBind, a computational biology method that can be used for the identification of novel genetic markers for trait selection. By acquiring this exclusive license, ENPICOM is entitled to use this method to develop commercial applications for trait selection in plant and animal breeding. These applications can, for example, guide the breeding of plants that cope better with drought or extreme heat to meet today's global food challenges.

Two research institutes of the Faculty of Science of the UvA (IvI and ILLC) start cooperation with SAP


The research institutes IvI and ILLC have started cooperation with software company SAP.
Two PhD students will be appointed during the course of this cooperation, one at ILLC (Dr. Ivan Titov) and one at IvI (Prof. Max Welling). The projects consider the analysis of ‘trading networks’. Professor Welling illustrates: ‘In our research we will analyze products and companies which trade over the networks. For this purpose we will rely on text analysis in combination with machine learning. ’The cooperation allows to get an even deeper understanding of how text analysis and machine learning can influence a trading network such for example Ariba, an SAP company. Haermonics winner of the AXON Innovation for Health Award 2016
Wouter Markus of Haermonics, AMC spin-off, is the winner of the AXON Innovation for Health Award 2016 for the best pitch presentation. Haermonics received a voucher of € 2.500,- worth consultancy hours from AXON Lawyers, the sponsor of the award.

ACE Venture lab officially announced the ''Startup Village' project - a complex of offices and event spaces for startups that will be built at Amsterdam Science park before September 2016. Read more.

 
CTcue starts working with two new clients



CTcue starts at the Martini Hospital in Groningen and Amphia Hospital Breda. The startup is making Electronic Health Record data accessible and useful for a total of seven hospitals now. Read more.

IXA is organising a new series of workshops in the form of breakfast sessions on various valorisation topics. The breakfast workshops are open to all scientists from AMC, HvA, UvA, VU, VUmc and NWO Institutes. Participation is free of charge and breakfast will be served. From valorization grants till collaborating with companies
In this workshop we provide an overview of the financing possibilities in the different stages of the valorisation process. We are going to discuss the various types of valorisation grants and -funds.
The utilisation paragraph will also be discussed. And we will cover other forms of financing, like crowdfunding and collaborating with a company. What is a company looking for and what are important criteria for them to collaborate?

Intellectual Property and Research Contracts, Thursday 19 May, 15:00-17:00
What should you take into account in collaborations with an external partner. What do you need to settle in a contract. Who is authorized to sign and should Intellectual Property (IP) always be included in a contract? In this workshop we will answer all this question and we will also discuss IP and patenting shortly.

Presentation skills in network situations, Thursday 9 June, 8:30-11:30
Valorisation implies contacting external parties in search for cooperation or exchanging knowledge. In this skill training you learn how to get attention for yourself and your idea or research in networking situations. During this workshop you will be able to practice your elevator pitch and how to present yourself in network situations.

Funding PhD recruitment in SMEs
The European Union is taking first steps to help European SMEs and start-ups fund recruitment of the best talent for research and innovation from around the world.  The EU will fund the recruitment of post-doctoral research associates from other countries to explore an innovation business idea in the European SMEs and start-ups. Radboud Dam would like to invite you to participate in a short survey which is part of his MBA thesis for the Amsterdam Business School (ABS is part of the UvA).
 
The main focus of his study is the university-industry collaborations (UIC) or collaborations between higher education institutes and industry (and how to improve this). Specifically, he is interested in your perspective and opinion in regard to perceived benefits and barriers of UIC. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete.
