Indestructible bicycle tire of HvA alumni in production at Schwalbe |
AUAS alumni Engineering Neil van den Haak and Kevin Kesteloo, recently closed a deal with bicycle tire producer Schwalbe. During their training at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, they designed an indestructible, airless inner tube that now forms the most important part of the new 'Airless System' introduced by Schwalbe. This new Airless System recently won the Bicycle Innovation Award 2018. The jury of the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award agreed: Neil and Kevin work from the conviction that this product is really going to conquer the market for a promising product that is too good to be true. Startup and Running |
A new platform for (student) entrepreneurs to find startup coaches.Finding a good mentor is difficult but in the start-up phase of a company to be able to spar with an experienced entrepreneur is a very important aspect. Therefore the Startup and Running platform was launched on 5 April. Via this platform, Amsterdam students who want to start a business within the mentoring pool of Startup and Running can find a mentor that suits them. A mentor really makes the difference when starting a business. Read more.

Festive Finale Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award |
Tuesday 19 June is the festive finale of the 13th Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award. Five finalists will pitch their ideas that tackle all different kind of challenges. The jury, chaired by Barbara Baarsma, will award the best idea with the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2018 and € 10,000. Also the High Potential Award will be announced and awarded with € 5,000.
It promises to be an inspirational afternoon full of innovative ideas. Read more and registration. |

Impact Award New this year is the Impact Award. We honor the 'established' researchers who have made a meaningful contribution to society, with their important innovations. Through promo videos the nominees can compete for this Award.

VU Dream teams now located in the Amsterdam Venture Studios |
On Wednesday 21 March, Vinod Subramaniam, Rector Magnificus of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, opened the new rooms for the Human Power Team (HPT), Pulse Racing and WASUB in a festive way.
|
|
|
For VU it is important that students have the opportunity, next to their academic training, to expand their knowledge and skills in view of their future career and social position. With this new location in the Amsterdam Venture Studios, VU provides ample space for the students of the Human Power Team, WASUB and PULSE Racing to take full advantage of this opportunity. At a permanent location at the VU the students of the three teams can now prepare carefully selected athletes to deliver top performances in equally carefully developed vehicles. The teams are independent companies where students are responsible for the entire process. Read more (in Dutch). |

IXA workshop - Working on your idea in one day (April 19, VU) |
From idea to a strategy to create impact Get ready to develop your idea into a business plan and to give a convincing pitch to stakeholders in one day! During the day we will take you through all the steps to bring your idea to the market. In the morning you will work on developing your idea with professionals. We will show different models to develop your idea into an exploitation plan or business case. You will also get an insight in what stakeholders are looking for, and how you can prepare yourself to enter into dialogue with them. In the afternoon you will learn how to draw attention to yourself and your idea or research in networking situations during a pitchtraining. Read more and registration.

Ahti Connect – ‘Healthtech startups: How to become a successful entrepreneur in healthcare?’ (April 19) |
Thursday April 19 the seventh ahti Connect will be organised. Theme of this edition is: ‘Healthtech startups: How to become a successful entrepreneur in healthcare?’ NLC brings (scientific) innovations further by bringing together entrepreneurs, relevant technology and risk-bearing capital and developing them as a startup. The City of Amsterdam started with their third edition of ‘Startup in Residence’. In this program, the City once again cooperates with startups to solve social issues with innovative ideas and offers itself among other things as launching customer. Read more and registration.

Patent workshop (April 26, AMC) |
What is a patent? Why should I apply for it? What can I use it for? What’s in it for me? In this workshop relevant aspects of patenting will be dealt with, such as: what is an invention, what are the objectives of patenting, what are the benefits for the inventors and the University and what procedures are in place. ERC Advanced Grant for VU biophysicist Erwin Peterman |
The ERC Advanced Grant is the largest individual research subsidy in Europe. With the five-year subsidy of 2.5 million euros, Peterman of the Faculty of Science will investigate how cells can measure information from their environment. With this amount he can hire two PhD students, two postdocs and a technician. In addition, the money is used to upgrade microscopes and build a new advanced microscope. Read more (in Dutch).

Eight researchers to conduct research at UvA with Marie Curie Fellowship |
Eight talented researchers have been awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship to conduct research at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The awarded projects include research on border control within the EU, on suicide prediction and on increasing fire activity in the Amazon Basin. Each fellowship recipient will receive about €180,000. Read more. |

Vici grant worth 1.5 million euros awarded to eleven UvA and AMC-UvA researchers |
Eleven researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Academic Medical Center (AMC) have each received a Vici grant worth 1.5 million euros to conduct research over the coming five years. Vici, which is awarded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), is one of the largest personal grants in the Netherlands and is targeted at outstanding senior researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research and to act as coach to younger researchers.
