De ontwikkelingen op de VU Campus volgen elkaar snel op. Om ervoor te zorgen dat alle medewerkers in de verschillende VU gebouwen op de hoogte zijn van werkzaamheden op, rond en in de nabije omgeving van de campus ontvang je deze ‘werk in uitvoering’ nieuwsbrief.

Deel deze informatie alsjeblieft binnen je faculteit of dienst, zodat alle betrokkenen op de hoogte zijn van de werkzaamheden.

Denk mee over de inrichting van Onderwijsvoorzieningen op de VU Campus
De Facilitaire Campus Organisatie (FCO) is verantwoordelijk voor de ontwikkeling, realisatie en vernieuwing van onderwijs- en onderzoekruimten en alle faciliteiten op de VU Campus. Zij krijgt daarbij advies van de Expertgroep Onderwijsvoorzieningen over de positionering en de identiteit van onderwijsvoorzieningen en de inrichting van de onderwijsomgeving. Het Instellingsplan VU 2015 – 2020 met de daarin geformuleerde onderwijsambities is hiertoe de leidraad. De 25 leden van de expertgroep zijn docent, student, lid van het Portefeuillehouders Overleg Onderwijs,  linking pin naar de VU-brede onderwijsprogramma’s of beleidsverantwoordelijke.

Ontwerpprincipes Onderwijsomgeving
Op basis van de thema’s ontmoeting, onderwijsvormen en identiteit verzorgt FCO de inrichting en indeling van de onderwijsruimtes en de gebouwen:

• Ontmoeting De campus ís een open en gastvrije onderwijsomgeving en biedt gelegenheid tot spontane en geplande ontmoetingen met elkaar en met bezoekers. Uitgangspunt is dat studenten naar de campus komen voor onderwijs, ook nu de mogelijkheden van digitaal onderwijs oneindig lijken: onderwijs van de VU is ‘campus based’.
  
  
• Onderwijsvormen De diversiteit van te faciliteren activiteiten is groot: van zelfstudie tot walking dinners, van college tot promotie. Alle faciliteiten hebben een goed basisniveau; door het combineren van verschillende ruimten en een aanvulling met bijvoorbeeld horeca ontstaan meer mogelijkheden.
  
  
• Identiteit Het individu voelt zich thuis: Op de campus is voldoende ruimte voor plekken of voor activiteiten die maken dat de student of docent zichzelf ‘herkent’. Daarnaast biedt de campus de mogelijkheid voor ontmoeting, met bijvoorbeeld je ‘studie-/vakgenoten, die je (nog) niet kent, om daarmee je horizon te verbreden.

FCO richt zich momenteel op de inrichting van de onderwijs- en studieomgeving van het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw, de verbouwing van Gebouw MF en de nodige aanpassingen aan de bestaande gebouwen, waaronder de vrijgekomen ruimten in de B-toren in het Hoofdgebouw.

Typologieën onderwijsruimten
Vanuit een analyse van typen onderwijs (van Bachelor onderwijs tot HOVO) ontwikkelt FCO samen met de Expertgroup Onderwijsvoorzieningen en de Werkgroep Onderwijs Nieuw Universiteitsgebouw ‘typologieën’ voor onderwijsruimten en (dedicated) studieplekken. Typologieën zijn onder andere audiovisuele middelen, type meubilair, comfort, sfeer, andere voorzieningen. Elke typologie is geschikt voor een aantal onderwijsvormen. Zo zijn we op zoek naar de kenmerken van een ruimte voor interactieve werkvormen.

IT werkzaamheden
In de periode 7 t/m 9 maart voert IT tussen 18.00 en 22.00 uur onderhoudswerkzaamheden uit aan het netwerk in gebouw MF. Tussen deze tijdstippen is er geen verbinding met het netwerk. Dat betekent onder meer dat je niet bij documenten op het netwerk kan (G:- en H:-schijf) en dat er geen internetverbinding en WiFi beschikbaar is.

Upgrade Gebouw MF
Op de VU Campus verrijzen de komende tijd verschillende nieuwbouwprojecten, zoals het O|2 Labgebouw, het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw en het Onderzoek gebouw VU (locatie School Werk Tuinen). Stapsgewijs verhuist - tot ongeveer 2020 - een groot aantal VU en VUmc medewerkers uit het gebouw MF naar deze nieuwe gebouwen. Doordat er veel ruimtes leegkomen ontstaat de mogelijkheid gebouw MF te upgraden zodat het tot 2030 kan blijven functioneren en, nog belangrijker, dat medewerkers ook in een prettige omgeving kunnen blijven werken. Dankzij de verbouwing wordt de indeling van gebouw MF efficiënter. Daardoor ontstaat er ruimte voor nieuwe samenwerkingsvormen in een meer eigentijdse onderzoeks-, werk- en studieomgeving.

Met het opknappen van de begane grond is het eerste deel van het continueringsplan afgerond. Van maart 2017 tot eind 2020 volgt er een nieuwe fase, de uitvoering van het Masterplan MF, waarin is vastgelegd hoe (1) de overige verdiepingen met vooral onderwijs en werplekken aangepakt worden en (2) welke schuifbewegingen er zullen gaan plaatsvinden:

1. De upgrade bestaat uit beperkte maatregelen en inspanningen zodat de huidige gebruikers en nieuwe bewoners (bijvoorbeeld de Amstelacademie van het VUmc en de Faculteit Bewegingswetenschappen) er in een prettige omgeving kunnen werken. Dat betekent bijvoorbeeld nieuwe vloerbedekking, het schilderen van wanden en meer licht creëren in gangen en ruimtes door o.a. glazen panelen.  
2. Parallel aan de planning van deze werkzaamheden, zullen groepen gebruikers naar elders binnen het gebouw moeten verhuizen. Soms gaan zij direct naar hun definitieve werkplek, maar het kan ook zo zijn dat zij naar een tijdelijke locatie moeten verhuizen.

Drie kernthema’s
Evenals bij de verbouwing van de begane grond staan ook nu de drie kernthema’s centraal:

Ontmoeten
Naast het optimaal faciliteren van de werkprocessen is het belangrijk dat de inrichting van het gebouw samenwerking stimuleert. Dit doen we door plekken en ruimten te creëren voor korte en de toevallige ontmoeting en georganiseerde bijeenkomsten.

Oriëntatie
Zowel binnen het gebouw, maar ook op de campus moeten gebruikers weten waar zij zich bevinden. Het gebouw krijgt een meer open karakter zodat het betrokken wordt bij de VU Campus. Denk aan het creëren van meer (dag)licht en het toepassen van transparantie in bouwdelen.

Identiteit
Het uitgangspunt voor MF is dat het interdisciplinaire samenwerking faciliteert (over de grenzen van faculteiten heen). De medewerker werkt tijd en plaats onafhankelijk, terwijl hij of zij wel deel uit maakt van een sectie of afdeling. Daarom is aandacht voor herkenbaarheid, identiteit en interne cohesie van een sectie of afdeling.

Planning upgrade
Medio maart 2017 wordt gestart met de C0 en de H0 vleugels op de begane grond. C0 (het gebied achter de ingang naast het W&N gebouw tot aan het trappenhuis) krijgt verschillende werkgroep ruimtes. Bij H0 (achter de informatiebalie van het Instituut voor Onderwijs en Opleidingen VUmc) komen vooral  zit- en werkplekken voor IOO.

Think along the interior of Education Services at the university campus
Corporate Real Estate and Facilities (FCO) is responsible for the development, construction and renovation of all university campus buildings and facilities, including spaces for education and research. The Expert Group on Education Resources advises FCO on the positioning and identity of educational facilities and the organization of the educational environment. The guiding principles are encapsulated in the ambitions as formulated in the university’s Strategic Plan for 2015 - 2020.  It has 25 members in total, including lecturers, students, OPDO  (joint consultation of Portfolio Holders and Directors of Education) members, individuals involved in university-wide degree programmes and policy makers.

Educational environment design principles
FCO is responsible for the design and layout of the university’s buildings and their interior spaces, focusing on the themes of encounter, teaching methods and identity:
 

• Encounter The campus offers an open and welcoming educational environment that encourages both spontaneous and planned encounters between students, staff and visitors. The principle is that students come to the campus to learn, despite the prevalence of digital methods: education at VU Amsterdam is campus-based.
  
  
• Teaching methods The university must facilitate a vast range of activities: from independent study to ‘walking dinners’, from lectures to PhD ceremonies. All university facilities are fit for a wide range of uses. Various spaces can be combined, and catering (and other) facilities are available.
  
  
• Identity People feel at home on campus. Students and staff can take
  advantage of a range of activities and venues according to their own individual needs and desires. The campus also provides ample opportunity for everyone to broaden their horizon by engaging with their peers and by getting to know new people.

FCO is currently working on the design for the educational environment in the New University Building, the renovation of the MF building and required renovation work in other university buildings.

Typologies for teaching and learning spaces
FCO, the Expert Group for Educational Resources and the Working Group for Education in the New University Building are developing typologies for teaching and learning spaces based on an analysis of the types of education offered (from Bachelor’s courses to higher education for over-fifties). Among other things, the typologies involve a number of elements required in a room: audio-visual equipment, furnishings, comfort, atmosphere and other facilities. Each typology can be applied to a number of teaching methods. We are currently investigating the characteristics involved in interactive teaching methods to define an appropriate typology.

IT maintenance work
IT maintenance work will take place in the MF building from 7 - 9 March between 18:00 and 22:00. Network connectivity will be disrupted during these times. This means that you will have no access to documents on the network (G: and H: drives), and that there will be no internet or WiFi.

MF building upgrade
A number of new construction projects are taking place on the VU campus, including the O|2 Lab building, the New University Building and the VU Research building (at the School Werk Tuinen). Between now and 2020, a large number of VU and VUmc staff members will move from the current MF building to these new facilities. As space becomes vacant, we will have the opportunity to renovate and upgrade the MF building. This means we will be able to keep the building in operation until 2030, while providing employees with a pleasant working environment. The renovation work will make the building’s interior layout more efficient, facilitating new forms of cooperation in a more contemporary research, work and study environment.

The first phase of the renovation work, involving upgrades to the ground floor, has already been completed. The next phase will take place from March 2017 till late 2020: the implementation of the MF building Master Plan. This plan defines two aspects: (1) the renovation of the remaining floors, with specific emphasis on teaching areas and offices, and (2) the relocations that will be necessary:

1. The upgrade itself will be limited in scope, but will provide current and new users (e.g. the VUmc Amstel Academy and the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences) with a pleasant working environment. The floor coverings will be replaced, the walls will be painted and glass panels will be installed in hallways and interior spaces to improve light penetration.
2. Groups of users will have to relocate to other parts of the building while the work is taking place. In some cases the relocation will be permanent, while some groups of users will return to their original location following completion of the upgrade.

Three core themes
Just as during the renovation of the ground floor, the three core themes are key:

Encounter
The building’s layout must not only be conducive to efficient working processes, but it must also encourage cooperation. We will achieve this by creating spaces for brief and casual encounters and for organized gatherings.

Orientation
People must always be aware of their location within the building as well as anywhere on campus. The building will have a more open character thanks to better lighting, greater penetration of daylight and translucent structural components. These interventions will help to make the building a more integral part of the university campus.

Identity
The premise behind the MF building is that it will encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation (transcending the boundaries of individual faculties). The individual employee will not be constrained by time or location, even though they will still be associated with a section or department, thus emphasizing the recognition, identity and internal cohesion of the relevant section or department.

Upgrade schedule
The renovation of the C0 and H0 wings on the ground floor will start in mid-March 2017. New seminar rooms will be created in the C0 wing (the area behind the entrance next to the W&N building up to the stairwell). Seating and working areas for IOO will be created in the H0 wing (behind the VUmc IOO information desk).
