Cyanide removal catalyst shortlisted for Emerging Technologies Competition |
An innovative cyanide removal catalyst invented by Dr Paula Oulego Blanco, Dr Raveendran Shiju and Prof. Gadi Rothenberg from the University of Amsterdam’s Sustainable Chemistry Research Priority Area has been shortlisted for the Emerging Technologies Competition of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

AMC patents basis of the MIA technology |
Lapara Surgical and the UMC Utrecht signed a licensing agreement during the Pontes Medical Meeting at the end of May. The Intellectual Property (IP) on the Minimally Invasive Assistant (MIA, a mechanic alternative for the operation robot) was officially licensed to Lapara Surgical, an important milestone in the road to market. With the agreement, Lapara Surgical gets the exclusive rights to use the patents and IP filed on the MIA system. The Pontes Medical expert meeting took place in the Amsterdam Medical Center. A perfect location, since the MIA project started with the PhD research of Joris Jaspers in this hospital, which led to the two patents that form the basis of the MIA technology.

Grant proposal approved for XR4Y |
The company of XR4Y successfully applied for the “MKB-innovatiestimulering Regio en Topsectoren Haalbaarheidsprojecten”. With this grant the founders of XR4Y, Wesley Poland and Joran Angevaare (UvA students), can now perform a feasibility study on their plans. They envision a mobile device that provides people, who unfortunately had an accident that possibly resulted in a fracture, to make an X-ray image of the injury.

New cooperation police and UvA |
The police and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) are going to work together to analyze large amounts of seized data from investigations. Three UvA PhD candidates will conduct their PhD research with the police to directly apply their research into the current cases.

Medtech Innovation Challenge 2017: Award for International Women's Team: Breakthrough in Childrens Ventilation Fixation |
Insertion of the respiratory tube in children on the intensive care must be done accurately and then firmly secured. For children, this remains a traumatic experience, despite sedatives and painkillers. During a two-day Innovation Challenge of Pontes Medical and U CREATE Center of Expertise in the AMC, a contest was written out involving multidisciplinary teams of medical students, technical doctors and industrial designers.
This eventually resulted in a simple and effective new concept: NaFix. The child gets a transparent mask over the nose with soft straps over the head. |

The respiratory tube simply clicks onto the mask. The mask can be manufactured in various sizes and is easily replaceable.

The Knowledge Mile |
The Knowledge Mile is an area in Amsterdam that runs from the Nieuwmarkt to the Amstelstation. The area, with the Wibautstraat and Weesperstraat in the centre, are well known for the urban challenges they face, such as high traffic volumes, flooding and air pollution. The area is also one of the most knowledge-intensive regions in the Netherlands with over 60.000 students. The Knowledge Mile community improves the quality of life in the area, by connecting the knowledge, creativity and technology of tomorrow, with today’s urban challenges. Read more |

The finalists for the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2017 are selected. The jury, chaired by Mirjam van Praag, has selected ten finalists from all entries of the Amsterdam universities and research institutes. Innovations and new technologies offer innovative solutions for a variety of social issues.

On June 10 and 11 IXA is organizing the 6th entrepreneurial ‘snelkookpanweekend’ together with SIA and DutchCE for college employees at the new location of ACE Venture Lab, startup village at the Amsterdam Science Park.
During an inspirational and interactive weekend, higher vocational teachers and employees can develop their entrepreneurial ideas. This can be their personal idea, but also an idea of the educational institute to do a POC application or a Take off HBO request. Read more

HealthInc incubator program, starting October 2017 |
Ahti (Amsterdam health & technology institute) and AMC (Academic Medical Center Amsterdam) launch HealthInc – the incubator program of Amsterdam for entrepreneurs in health and technology. HealthInc is an intensive full-time incubator program for early stage health and technology entrepreneurs. During ten weeks, the participants will dive into the various aspects of developing and accelerating their venture. The first edition starts on Monday 9 October, 2017. Subscription is now open.
