Commercial gain is leading for Chinese investment in Europe
Commercial gain and not the extension of political power is the main motive for Chinese investments in Europe.

This is the conclusion of PhD research by Yuan Ma. At BNR, co-supervisor and Sinologist Peter Peverelli (SBE) has spoken about the research. For the interview (in Dutch) please click here. The common idea is that China invests to increase political influence, but that does not appear to be the case.“In China you have a much greater role for the government, also at the micro level. You can also see that in distressed countries such as Greece. China buys property for example in the port of Pireaus. However, companies that make these purchases are led by professionals who mainly focus on commercial growth."
