Breast Examination will be less painful

New pressure certified for use in European Union
Over the past five years Sigmascreening - a spin-off company of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam - has developed a new system to make the X-ray study of breast cancer generally much less painful for women. The company received an important certification for the EU and has been discussing the new system with Dutch, French, German, English and Swiss hospitals. Sigmascreening wants to make the innovation available as soon as possible to as many women as possible. Read more (in Dutch).

904Labs and CTcue got €170,000 for a collaborative project
904Labs and CTcue received a grant from “MIT-R&D-cooperation project within the topsector Life Sciences & Health”. The award of €170,000 will be used for developing Qupa – a project that will result in automating the process of finding quality indicators within the Electronic Health Records (EHR) in the hospitals. 904Labs is a spin off from UvA and both are startups from ACE Venture Lab family – Read more.

 
Pre-announcement Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2016



At the beginning of February the submission for the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award will start, the Amsterdam award for the most innovative research-based ideas with a social and/or commercial impact. This year we are introducing a matchmaking event combined with the Award which gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself to a selection of companies, entrepreneurs and investors.

 

 
The new Amsterdam Green Campus will be officially launched

With themes such as: green genetics, green environment and green chemistry.
The Amsterdam Green Campus will be officially launched on 26 January 2016. Amsterdam Green Campus is a regional innovation platform where researchers, educational institutions and entrepreneurs will collaborate on innovations and provide education for talents (the employees of tomorrow). Companies can submit their innovation question and the MBO, HBO and universities can strengthen their education. They will work together towards a sustainable and green future. Read more.

The IXA valorisation guide for social sciences and humanities

Especially for researchers who want to learn more about valorisation, the IXA team has compiled the IXA valorisation guide for social sciences and humanities (SSH). The text is based on the knowledge and experiences of researchers and the IXA team. This guide was written for researchers looking for practical valorisation guidelines. Whether you are taking your first steps along this path or already have valorisation experience, this handbook helps you make the most out of your scientific knowledge.

Breakfast workshops on valorisation

IXA is organising a new series of workshops in the form of breakfast sessions on various valorisation topics. The breakfast workshops are open to all scientists from AMC, HvA, UvA, VU, VUmc and NWO Institutes. Participation is free of charge and breakfast will be served. The workshops are very practical and aimed to get you started immediately. Read more.

How to valorise successfully, Thursday 10 March, 8:30-10:30
Do you have an idea with societal or commercial potential but you don’t know what steps you should take to be successful? In this workshop we will go through the entire valorisation process; from the starting point to the further development of the idea, the organisation around the valorisation process, the legal aspects and identifying your network.

Patent workshop, Thursday 17 March, 15:00-17:00
What is Intellectual Property? What is a patent? Why should I apply for it?
What can I use it for? What’s in it for me?
In this workshop these and other questions are being addressed. The patent workshop is a highly interactive program, with much room for questions and discussions.

The next step in valorisation, Thursday 24 March, 8:30-10:30
Generating ideas is not too difficult. To make your idea more concrete is usually more complicated. Which steps are to be taken? In this interactive workshop we show different models to develop your idea one step further: What are the benefits? And which problem will you solve for whom? And how do you organise your valorisation activities?

ACE Grit Project

In February 2016, the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE) and Gerrit Rietveld Academie are  organizing ‘Grit Project’ for the fourth time.
For one weekend, 30 students from the 5 main educational institutions of Amsterdam work on cases provided by several commissioners. At the end of the weekend, they are expected to pitch their solutions in front of a professional jury. In short: 48 hours of intensive collaboration, entrepreneurship and developing creative and unexpected ideas and solutions - That is Grit Project!

Kick out minor Entrepreneurship - ACE Venture Lab café, 28 January




This month there is a special edition of the ACE Venture Lab cafe on 28 January 2016. ACE Venture Lab café is hosting the Kick Out event for the UvA minor Entrepreneurship in the CREA theatre. Eight finalists will pitch their ideas to win the prize for best startup! Afterwards we will meet each other for drinks in the CREA cafe. Read more.

Aging affects what organizations know and can do
The theme of aging is regularly in the news. Usually to do with health care, pensions or the lack of jobs for the elderly. Less often you hear about organizations losing a lot of specialist knowledge through aging. Inholland and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam are organizing a knowledge café about knowledge and innovation in aging organizations. The central question here is: What does aging mean to the knowledge development and innovation in your organization?

Pre-announcement STW Take-off grant (40k), deadline 28 March 2016

Technology Foundation STW invites applications for its take-off feasibility studies grants. These aim to support feasibility studies to help speed up the commercialisation of innovative knowledge. Innovation focused on products, processes, care or services from every academic discipline is eligible for funding.

The program Take-off is aimed at facilitating and encouraging business and entrepreneurship from the Dutch universities and research institutes recognized by NWO. This involves the creation of innovative new businesses following knowledge development and use by researchers at these universities.

Earlier awarded Take-off grants

AMC project on the commercial development of VHH antibodies against BMP4 receives a € 40K STW Valorisation grant
Prof. Krishnadath was awarded an STW Take-off 1 grant of € 40,000. With the grant she intends to test the antibodies in mouse models for different gastrointestinal cancers as a first next step towards their development of a new anti-cancer drug that is likely to enhance the effect of chemotherapy and potentially has a positive effect on metastasis as well.

AMC project on the commercial development of biological pacemakers awarded a € 40K STW Valorisation grant

Dr. Boink was awarded an STW Take-off 1 grant of € 40,000. With this grant he intends to construct new viral vectors to conduct final pre-clinical testing. These studies mark an important step towards the development of clinically applicable biological pacemakers that have the potential to improve quality of life in the majority of pacemaker patients.
