De ontwikkelingen op de VU Campus volgen elkaar snel op. Met deze nieuwsbrief houden we alle medewerkers in de verschillende VU gebouwen op de hoogte van werkzaamheden op, rond en in de nabije omgeving van de campus.

Deel deze informatie alsjeblieft binnen je faculteit of dienst, zodat alle betrokkenen op de hoogte zijn van de werkzaamheden.

Eind november is gestart met de aanleg van het groene dak van 1.100 m2 op het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw. Dit duurzame retentiedak dient als buffer om overtollig regenwater tijdelijk op te slaan om vervolgens af te voeren naar het riool. Hiermee levert de VU een bijdrage aan een duurzame oplossing voor de waterafvoer op de Zuidas om toekomstig wateroverlast zoveel mogelijk te kunnen voorkomen. Leuk weetje: het groene dak wordt een veenweide, de oorspronkelijke vegetatie van de Zuidas.

Natuursteen
Behalve op het dak van het Nieuwe Universiteits-gebouw werken we ook aan de gevels. Tussen de kozijnen komt natuursteen, dat we aanbrengen met een hefsteiger. Binnenin het gebouw zijn we bezig met de binnengevel van het Atrium en de collegezalen. Ook worden de plafonds en de vaste binnenwanden geplaatst.

Wanden, vloerbedekking, meubilair
Op dit moment werken we aan het ontwerp van de afbouw en inrichting van het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw. Het gaat dan om de plaats van de wanden, het afwerkingsmateriaal zoals de vloerbedekking, de theatertechniek, AVC-middelen en het losse en vaste meubilair. Medio 2018, nadat het casco van het gebouw klaar is, starten we met de bouw van de inrichting. De colleges in het nieuwe gebouw starten vanaf september 2019.

Fietsenkelder
Tussen het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw en het OZW-gebouw is begonnen met het bouwen van een fietsenkelder. Om overlast door geluid en trillingen te beperken, hebben we zoveel mogelijk gebruik gemaakt van ‘stille’ technieken. Dit werk is inmiddels afgerond en de vloer is gestort. De fietsenstalling gaat plaats bieden aan 1600 fietsen en gaat op termijn de stalling op het campusplein bij het W&N gebouw vervangen.

In november is het verbouwen van Gebouw MF begonnen. Tot eind maart 2018 worden de C-vleugel op de begane grond en de A-, B-, C- en D-vleugels van verdiepingen 1 t/m 4 geüpgraded. De eerste sloopwerkzaamheden zijn uitgevoerd en vanaf begin december kan weer worden opgebouwd.

In de H0-gang is goed te zien hoe de werkruimtes worden: het is er lichter, eigentijdser en ruimtelijker en worden diverse soorten werk- en ontmoetingsplekken ingericht. Meer informatie

Nieuwe overlegruimten en zelfstudieruimten 1e verdieping van D-vleugel in Gebouw MF
De 1e verdieping van de D-vleugel - direct naar boven bij het trappenhuis hoofdingang - krijgt een nieuwe indeling. Er komen overlegruimten en een zelfstudieruimte bij en in de gang komen een koffiepunt en zitjes. Het Atrium - D146 of raadszaal – blijft onveranderd en wordt opgefrist.

De vleugel krijgt ook een modernere en lichtere uitstraling. Net als op de begane grond werken we met houten lamellen om aan te geven dat deze onderdelen met elkaar verbonden zijn. De fraaie natuurstenen vloer in de gang blijft behouden.

Onderstaande impressies geven een globaal beeld van hoe de vleugel eruit gaat zien.

Skills-labs: onderwijsruimtes ingericht als ziekenhuiskamer
Op de 2e verdieping worden skills-labs gerealiseerd. Deze onderwijsruimtes zijn als ziekenhuiskamers ingericht. Ieder skills lab heeft aangrenzend een voorbereidingsruimte en in de buurt van elk lab bevindt zich een computerinstructiezaal. Er worden vier soorten skills labs ingericht.

Skills-labs basiszorg
Een officiële algemene verpleegafdeling zoals in het VUmc, met minimaal zes bedden, inclusief benodigde aansluitingen voor perslucht en zuurstof.

Skills-lab intensieve zorg
Vergelijkbaar met een intensive care-afdeling in het VUmc, voorzien van de modernste technologie, met bedden met ICT-aansluitingen en geavanceerde apparatuur.

Skills-lab OK assistent
Een operatiekamer met OK-tafel en bijbehorende apparatuur.

Skills-lab radiodiagnostisch laborant
Een volledige röntgenkamer met observatiekamer. Dit lab heeft stralingsvrije loodwanden en een röntgenapparaat.

De VU Campus heeft sinds kort, evenals nog vier andere locaties in de stad, een Amsterdam Venture Studio (AVS). De vijf locaties in de stad bieden studenten, onderzoekers en alumni van de Amsterdamse kennisinstellingen de gelegenheid om hun ideeën om te zetten in actie. Het zijn nieuwe plekken op de Amsterdamse campussen om bedrijven te starten, en deze te laten groeien.

Op de VU Campus is de AVS te vinden in de P2 vleugel van het W&N-gebouw. Dit deel van het gebouw is gerestyled en heeft een gezellige eigentijdse Breakout room, waar de reeds gevestigde startups elkaar kunnen ontmoeten. Hier kun je zien welke startups er al allemaal in de AVS zijn gehuisvest. Het zijn er al heel wat! Je bent van harte uitgenodigd eens een kijkje te komen nemen. Meer weten over:

Begin volgend jaar verhuizen de drie dreamteams van de Faculteit der Gedrags- en Bewegingswetenschappen naar de Amsterdam Venture Studio locatie in het W&N. De dreamteams richten zich op optimale prestatie van de mens op een fiets: op de weg, onder water en aangedreven door elektrostimulatie.

Het Human Power Team, een samenwerkingsverband van VU en TU Delft, probeert in het collegejaar 2017/2018 de snelste vrouw ter wereld op de fiets voort te brengen. TU Delft produceert de fiets, de VU selecteert en traint de beste sporter. Ook WASUB is een samenwerking met TU Delft. De studenten ontwerpen, bouwen en proberen snelheidsrecords te zetten met een onderwaterfiets: een onderzeeër met trapaandrijving. De VU selecteert en traint ook hier de piloot.

Het project Paralysis Upgraded by Leg Stimulation using Electricity (PULSE) ontwikkelt een fiets waarmee mensen met een dwarsleasie met hulp elektrostimulatie kunnen fietsen en selecteert en traint de beste atleten. Een van hen gaat deelnemen aan de Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bike Race in 2020. Dit is een samenwerkingsverband van VU, Universiteit Twente, TU Delft en revalidatiecentrum READE.

29 november opende rector Vinod Subramaniam de Global Room, een ruimte voor de internationale staf aan de VU, een landingsplek waar workshops, informatiebijeenkomsten, presentaties, kleine sociale bijeenkomsten en netwerksessies gehouden kunnen worden voor een internationaal publiek.

De rector benadrukte vanuit eigen ervaring het belang van de ruimte. Als markering van de opening hing hij een aandenken aan India aan de Global Wall (zie foto). Internationale collega’s worden van harte uitgenodigd dat ook te doen. Lees het hele nieuwsbericht over de opening.

De Global Room kwam er op initiatief van het International Staff Committee, dat sinds dit voorjaar meedenkt over het verbeteren van diensten voor internationale medewerkers. De ruimte werd gerealiseerd door HRM, FCO en VU International Office. Bekijk de Global Room in dit filmpje.

Activiteiten
In januari start een reeks science seminars en volgen informatie-bijeenkomsten over het Nederlandse subsidielandschap, het belastingsysteem en het pensioenstelsel. Naast het Initium, ACTA, het OZW gebouw en het ontwerp van het Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw heeft nu ook het Hoofdgebouw het duurzaamheids-certificaat BREEAM in Use behaald. BREEAM is een instrument om de duurzaamheid van nieuwe gebouwen, bestaande gebouwen, gebieden en sloopprojecten te meten en te beoordelen.

Het Hoofdgebouw is een pand van bijna 100.000 m2 met kantoren, onderwijs en andere voorzieningen. Het is gecertificeerd met de scores Good in de categorie Beheer en Good in de categorie Asset. Het is onze ambitie om al het reeds aanwezige vastgoed te certificeren voor BREEAM in Use met een niveau van minimaal Good. Met deze certificering is weer een stap gezet in de ontwikkeling van een duurzame en leefbare campus.

Eind september is de Buitenveldertsegracht geopend. Daarmee is het Hoofdgebouw aan een heuse gracht komen te liggen en dus een grachtenpand. Het is een mooie ontmoetingsplek geworden, maar een die is aangelegd uit bittere noodzaak. Op de steeds dichter bebouwde Zuidas is behoefte aan extra opvang van regenwater tijdens heftige buien, die door klimaatverandering naar verwachting steeds vaker zullen vallen. Daarom is het maken van waterbergingen onderdeel geworden van stedelijke ontwikkeling.

Maandag 11 december is de verbouwing gestart van het Concilium, de ontmoetingsplek voor de studenten- en studieverenigingen van de rechtenfaculteit op de 2e verdieping van Initium. Het Concilium bestaat uit een uitgebreide coffee-corner, zelfstudieplekken, bestuurs- en ledenkamers voor de studieverenigingen.

De werkzaamheden zijn opgedeeld in twee fasen. In de eerste fase, die 15 januari zal zijn afgerond, wordt dit gebied aangepast, na het vertrek van de studentenbalie, om ruimte te geven aan de groei van het aantal studieverenigingen en de behoefte aan meer studieplekken. Halverwege 2018 start fase twee, waarin een nieuwe ontmoetingsplek wordt gecreëerd op de 2e verdieping aan de kant van het Hoofdgebouw. In deze mixed-zone komen ook studieplekken voor studenten en zitwerkplekken voor medewerkers, om een goede plek te bieden voor ontmoetingen tussen studenten en docenten. Deze zone vormt de toegang tot het gehele werkgebied van de faculteit.

Pannenkoek in de tent
Alweer sinds de herfst staat Robbie’s Pancakes met een tent in de Boelegarden. Op deze overdekte brunch-, lunch-, coffee- en snackplek kun van maandag t/m woensdag genieten van pannenkoeken, poffertjes en andere lekkernijen. Ook leuk voor afdelingsborrels of eindejaarsactiviteiten.

Broodje in de tuin
Je kunt nu ook lunchen in de Botanische Tuin Zuidas. De winkel wordt dagelijks door het restaurant van het VUmc voorzien van heerlijke verse broodjes, soms met een salade, later wellicht met een soepje.

Maaltijd bij de foodtruck
Ook de foodtrucks op de VU Campus bieden volop mogelijkheden, zoals VUetnam en Stewart & Sally.

De vakjury van de Architectuurprijs Amstelveen heeft donderdag 16 november het nieuwe VU Sportcentrum op Uilenstede verkozen tot winnaar in de categorie utiliteitsbouw - gebouwen zonder woonbestemming. Er waren zeven genomineerden geselecteerd uit de nieuwbouwprojecten van de afgelopen vier jaar.



Het VU Sportcentrum Uilenstede is ontworpen door Slangen+Koenis Architecten, een bureau dat zich heeft ontwikkeld als specialist op het gebied van zwem- en sportaccommodaties. Lees verder

The VU campus is developing rapidly. We are sending you this newsletter in order to ensure that all employees in the various university buildings are aware of which projects are planned or underway on and around the campus.

Sustainable roof
The construction of the 1.100 m2 green roof of the New University Building commenced at the end of November. This sustainable water retention roof system serves as a buffer for the temporary storage of excess rainwater and then discharges the water into the sewers. This system is a way for VU Amsterdam to contribute to water drainage at Zuidas in a sustainable way in order to prevent or limit future flooding. Fun fact: the green roof will be a peat meadow, the original vegetation of the Zuidas area.

Natural stone
In addition to the roof of the New University Building, we are also working on the façades. Natural stone will be installed between the window frames using a mast climber. Inside the building we are working on the Atrium’s inner façade and the lecture halls. The ceilings and the fixed inner walls will also be constructed.

Walls, carpets, furniture
We are currently working on the design of the completion and layout of the New University Building. The work involved includes constructing the walls and finishing work such as laying carpets, installing stage technology and audio-visual equipment, and moving in movable and fixed furniture. In mid-2018, once the shell of the building has been completed, we will start on the completion of the interior. The first lectures in the new building will be held in September 2019.

Underground bicycle parking facility
The construction of an underground bicycle parking facility between the New University Building and the OZW building has begun. In order to limit nuisance caused by noise and vibrations, we have been using ‘silent’ techniques as much as possible. This work has now been completed and the concrete floor has been poured. The bicycle parking facility will have space for 1600 bicycles and will eventually replace the bicycle parking facility on Campusplein near the W&N building.

The Works Council has given a green light for the development of a new building for exact sciences degree programmes on campus. The building - which is to be constructed in the former school garden complex (schoolwerktuinen) - will be as sustainable as possible. External sustainability advisors, as well as The Green Office and other VU Amsterdam experts were consulted on this project.

Together with the O|2 Building and the New University Building, the new VU Medical Research Building, with an approximate size of 22,500 m2, will replace most of the current W&N building. The building has to be inviting and flexible and provide a space for meetings between various parties in medicine.

The building will have offices, educational facilities, rooms for practicals, general labs, specific research facilities such as laser techniques and the required supporting facilities. Together with the work rooms, meeting facilities and study areas, this building will be an appealing and top-quality learning and research environment that meets the modern demands of researchers and students. Approximately 400 FTEs will be working in the building. The building is expected to be completed in 2022.

Location new building:

Renovation work on the MF building has commenced

In November the renovation work started on the MF building. Renovation work will be carried out on the ground floor of the C wing and floors 1 to 4 of the A, B, C and D wings until the end of March 2018. The initial demolition work has been carried out and the rebuilding work commenced  at the start of December. The new rooms in the H0 hallway are lighter, more modern and more spacious, and various workstations and meeting places have been created.

New meeting rooms and study rooms on the 1st floor of the D wing in the MF building
The 1st floor of the D wing - at the top of the stairwell near the main entrance - is being renovated and updated. New meeting rooms and an extra study room are being created, and there will be a coffee station and seating area in the corridor. The Atrium - D146 or Council Hall - will not be renovated, but it will be redecorated.

The wing will be made lighter and more modern. Wooden slats will be used like those on the ground floor to show that these parts of the building are connected. The stone floor in the corridor will not be replaced.

The images below provide a general impression of what the wing will look like, although the end result may differ.

Skills labs: teaching and learning spaces that look like hospital rooms
Skills labs are being built on the 2nd floor. These teaching and learning spaces are made to look like hospital rooms. A preparation room will be located next to each skills lab, and a computer instruction room will also be located nearby. Four types of skills labs are being created.

Basic care skills labs
A general nursing ward like those at VUmc, with at least six beds and the necessary connections for compressed air and oxygen.

Intensive care skills lab
An intensive care ward like those at VUmc, fitted with the latest technology, beds with IT connections and advanced equipment.

Operating room assistant skills lab
An operating room with an operating table and the relevant equipment.

Radiodiagnostic technician skills lab
A complete röntgen room with an observation room. This lab has radiation-shielding lead walls and an X-ray machine.

Amsterdam Venture Studios and Demonstrator Lab on the VU Campus

The VU Campus is one of five academic locations in the city to recently set up an Amsterdam Venture Studio (AVS). The five locations in the city offer students, researchers and alumni of Amsterdam research institutes the opportunity to translate their ideas into action. Venture Studios are new locations on Amsterdam campuses for launching and growing start-ups.

On the VU Campus, the AVS can be found in the P2 wing of the W&N building. This part of the building has been restyled and there is a cosy, modern Breakout room where start-ups can get together and exchange ideas. Here you can see which start-ups are located at the AVS. Dream teams of the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences go to Amsterdam Venture Studios

Early next year, the three dream teams of the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences will relocate to the Amsterdam Venture Studio location at the W&N building. The dream teams focus on the optimal performance of human beings on bicycles: on the road, under water and propelled by electrostimulation.

The Human Power Team, an alliance between VU Amsterdam and TU Delft, aims to set the record for the fastest woman on earth on a bike in the 2017/2018 academic year. TU Delft is making the bike, and VU Amsterdam is selecting and training the best athlete. WASUB is also a collaboration with TU Delft. Students design, build and test the bike to try and set speed records on an underwater bicycle: a submarine with a pedal. VU Amsterdam also selects and trains the pilot here.

The Paralysis Upgraded by Leg Stimulation using Electricity (PULSE) project is developing a bicycle that will allow paraplegics to ride a bicycle thanks to electrostimulation, and selects and trains the top athletes. One of them will take part in the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bike Race in 2020. This is a collaboration between VU Amsterdam, the University of Twente, TU Delft and the READE rehabilitation centre.

Opening Global Room
The Global Room is a place where international staff can meet and interact. Staff can join and initiate events, workshops and Q&A sessions on relevant topics. Rector Subramaniam stressed the importance of such a place to settle in more easily and by putting a souvenir from India on the Global wall, he officially opened the Room.

The creation of the Global Room was initiated by the International Staff Committee that advices on improving services for international staff. They had indicated to want to meet their international collegues to network, share experiences and learn form each other. Events coming up are the Christmas drinks on 14 December, science seminars and information sessions about the Dutch subsidy landscape, the taxing system and pensions.

Main Building sustainability certificate
In addition to the Initium, ACTA, OZW building and the design of the New University Building, the Main Building has now also obtained a BREEAM in Use sustainability certificate. BREEAM is an instrument to measure and assess the sustainability of new buildings, existing buildings, areas and demolition projects.

The Main Building is almost 100,000 m2 large and boasts offices, lecture halls and other facilities. The building received a score of Good in both the Management and Asset categories. It is our ambition to obtain BREEAM certifications with a score of at least Good for all of the university’s properties. With this certification, another step has been taken in the development of a sustainable campus, a pleasant place to work and study.

Energy Master Plan 2035
VU Amsterdam and VUmc have joined forces to draw up an Energy Master Plan 2035. This describes the transition from energy management to a sustainable VU Campus. The ambition is to be in the top 3 of universities and university medical centres in the Netherlands in the area of sustainable, affordable and reliable energy within ten years.

VU Amsterdam and VUmc are working hard to become fossil-free by 2035, which means 100% natural gas-free in combination with 100% sustainably generated electricity. In the period leading up to 2021, more than 21 million euros will be invested in energy measures such as the further optimization of emergency power supplies and heat-cold storage. From now until 2035, all natural gas-driven turbines and boilers will be phased out.

Main building = Canal house
The Buitenveldertsegracht was opened at the end of September. This means that the Main Building is now situated next to an actual canal and can be considered a canalside property. It has become a beautiful meeting place that was created out of sheer necessity. On the increasingly densely developed Zuidas, there is a need for additional drainage of rainwater during heavy showers, which, due to climate change, are expected to happen more and more frequently. This is why constructing water storage facilities has become part of urban development.

Renovation meeting place for students at Initium
On Monday 11 December the renovation work started on the Concilium, the meeting place for students and student associations of the Faculty of Law on the 2nd floor of the Initium building. The Concilium consists of an extensive coffee corner, self-study spaces, boardroom facilities and study association rooms.

The work has been divided into two phases. The first phase, which will be completed on 15 January, will be modified once student services has moved out, to create room to grow for the number of study associations and the need for more study spaces. Halfway through 2018 phase two will start, in which a new meeting place is created on the second floor on the side of the Main Building. This mixed zone will also include study areas for students and seated workstations for employees, to facilitate meetings between students and lecturers. This zone provides access to the faculty’s entire work area.

The new way to enjoy lunch!

Pancakes in a tent
Since this autumn, Robbie’s Pancakes can be enjoyed in a tent in the Boelegarden. This covered brunch, lunch, coffee and snack spot offers pancakes, Dutch poffertjes and other snacks from Monday to Wednesday. Great for department drinks and end-of year parties and get-togethers.

Sandwich in the garden
You can now also enjoy lunch at the Zuidas botanical gardens. The VUmc restaurant now supplies the shop with delicious rolls, sometimes with a salad, and soups may be added in the future.

Food truck meals
The food trucks on the VU Campus offer plenty of choice and include VUetnam and Stewart & Sally.

Rialto@VUCampus
From now on, two films will be screened on campus twice a month on Tuesdays, at 17:45 and 20:30. The first film of every month includes an introduction or a post-film discussion with a guest lecturer. Come and watch the latest films in KC-07. On 9 and 23 January we will be showing the following films: Bar Bahar and You Were Never Really Here. Immediately following the showing of Bar Bahar on 23  January, Annemie Halsema, assistant professor of Philosophy, will be giving a guest lecture.

VU Sports Centre Uilenstede wins 2017 Architecture Award Amstelveen
On Thursday 16 November the jury of the Architecture Award Amstelveen named VU Sports Centre Uilenstede the winner in the non-residential buildings category. Seven nominees were selected from new construction projects completed in the past four years.

VU Sports Centre Uilenstede was developed by Slangen+Koenis Architecten, a firm that specializes in swimming facilities and sports venues.
