Stop the bleeding

The biggest risk for many victims of an attack is bleeding to death. Bystanders and auxiliaries, however, can make a difference. According to trauma surgeon Leo Geeraedts of VUmc tourniquets and hemostatic meshes should therefore be available in public places. Read more (only available in Dutch).

Funding for a feasibility study
Academic Proof of Concept Fund Amsterdam.
Do you have an innovation or invention that needs further development, but its practical feasibility and/or the (commercial) exploitation opportunities are still uncertain? Then you may be eligible for funding from the Academic Proof of Concept Fund Amsterdam (APCA)!

In a Proof of Concept study the conceptual, social, technical and/or economic feasibility is determined. For example, by addressing one of the following questions: Can an experimental setup be scaled up to a full production line? A mobile app is much appreciated by some participants as a demo, but what happens if used by laymen on a larger scale?

An application for the APCA fund can be done at IXA. The application may not exceed € 45,000, of which 50% is a loan and 50% needs to be matched (cash or in kind) by the applicant. Read more.

This project is made possible by the City of Amsterdam.

The first APCA grants awarded were, “Applying histatin 1 to improve integration of dental implants” by Jan Stap and Irene van Dijk (AMC) and “Identification of compounds that interfere with protein aggregation in Huntington’s Disease” by Eric Reits (AMC).

Thanks to an earlier PoC funding, Jeroen Pronk of VU is now able to implement the Pestplotter into schools.

IXA can assist you with an APCA application.

Introduction in valorisation, Thursday 16 February (VU)

What is valorisation and why is it relevant to my research?
How do I make a start with valorisation?
I have an idea with societal or commercial potential but I don’t know how to take the first step to successfully valorise this idea.

In this workshop we will go through the entire valorisation process; from the starting point to the further development of the idea.
For more information and registration.

The next step in valorisation, Thursday 9 March (location t.b.a.)
Generating ideas is not too difficult. To make your idea more concrete is usually more complicated. Which steps are to be taken? In this interactive workshop we show different models to develop your idea one step further: What are the benefits? Which problem will you solve for whom? And how do you organise your valorisation activities?

AMC professors improve mammography procedure
Less pain, more scientific value
Ard den Heeten and Kees Grimbergen (AMC) developed a new approach to mammography: Sensitive Sigma Paddle. It features capacitive sensors to measure the breast’s contact surface, so that with women of all sizes the same compression pressure can be maintained. “This enhances comparative scientific research and quality control”, says Grimbergen. To ensure brand independency, and maximum availability they founded AMC spin-off Sigmascreening. The first devices have been sold, and - if all goes well - within a few years the new minimal force mammography will be widely available.
