Anastasia Sergeeva one of the first members of Amsterdam Young Academy

The two Amsterdam universities UvA and VU have a new platform for talented young scientists, the Amsterdam Young Academy (AYA). On 18 October the first thirty members have been announced, among them Anastasia Sergeeva. AYA must become a new independent platform where talented young scientists from the UvA and VU meet and develop visions on science and society.

AYA is an initiative of five Amsterdam (ex-) members of The Young Academy of the KNAW: Kristine Steenbergh (VU), Rens Vliegenthart (University of Amsterdam), Sjoerd Repping (AMC / UvA), Hilde Geurts (UvA) and Jeroen de Ridder ( VU).

They felt that Amsterdam deserves its own young academy following other cities. A place where the free intellectual debate is central, with an independent and opinion-making role. A platform that also aims to promote collaboration between UvA and VU and between the two universities and the city of Amsterdam.

On Tuesday 6 November 2018 the Amsterdam Young Academy was officially launched at the Artis Library. During the event, which was led by moderator Andrea van Pol, the ambitions of AYA were set out and the first class of AYA was officially installed by Rijksmuseum general director Taco Dibbits.

The founding board selected the first thirty members from the candidates nominated from the UvA and VU. The faculties were asked to nominate proven talent that was promoted a maximum of eight years ago. Other important criteria were: demonstrable enthusiasm for science, for interdisciplinarity and for the translation of science to society. These members are supplemented with the current Amsterdam members of The Young Academy of the KNAW.
