Tidal and HKU will end the Loudness War
|
Pop music has become increasingly loud over the decades, which is known as the 'Loudness War'. The shift from CD to streaming services as the dominant sales platform for music provides an opportunity to end this war because music can now be normalized in one central location. HKU researcher Eelco Grimm cooperated with streaming service Tidal to design an optimal loudness levelling algorithm. He concludes that album normalization should be turned on by default, even in a shuffled playlist. Eelco presented his foundings at AES Berlin. Contact him at eelco.grimm@hku.nl.
