Opening Amsterdam Venture Studios

On Friday 29 September the first five Amsterdam Venture Studios will be officially opened by Constantijn van Oranje and Kajsa Ollongren. The locations are Amsterdam Science Park, VU Campus, AHTC (AMC), Amstelcampus and City Centre Campus (Humanities Lab).

The Amsterdam Venture Studios offers students, researchers and alumni of the Amsterdam knowledge institutes the opportunity to transform their ideas into action. These new places on the Amsterdam campuses facilitate the start and growth of new impactful businesses. Read more.

 
Opening Demonstrator Lab

Demonstrator Lab is a facility for students and researchers from all Amsterdam knowledge institutes where bright ideas can be transformed into tangible customer added value. It provides space and support to build the equipment, team, connections, and business tools that they need to understand whether their idea is feasible.

The first Demonstrator Lab in Amsterdam is located at the VU Campus in corridor P2 of the W&N building, close to the Venture Studios where more mature companies are solidifying their customer proposition. Read more.

Open house on Friday 29 September
Get to know the Demonstrator Lab on Friday 29 September, meet the startups and find out what makes them successful. The doors will be open from 08:30.

BNR 'Zakendoen Met'
One of the new Venture Studios will be converted into a BNR Nieuwsradio studio especially for this occasion. Annette van Soest and Thomas van Zijl will present the business show ‘Zakendoen Met‘ live from location VU Campus between 10:00 and 12:00.

ENPICOM enters next phase with new CEO


The Dutch bioinformatics software development company ENPICOM (spin-off of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) announced that they expanded the team with the experienced Life Sciences industry executive and health-tech entrepreneur Jos Lunenberg. After successfully serving customers with tailored bioinformatics data analysis and visualization solutions in the first two years of its existence, ENPICOM will now also bring to market an innovative software platform to support the development, patient stratification and treatment monitoring of immunotherapies. UvA spin-off company Scyfer acquired by Qualcomm
UvA spin-off Scyfer BV was acquired by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), an international market leader in next generation mobile chips. Scyfer is specialised in machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions and partners in making intelligent software for the manufacturing, service and medical sectors.

Blood test for cancer another step closer

Within a few years, only a tube of blood will be needed to detect the most common form of lung cancer. A recent study by VUmc shows that a blood test can determine with 91% certainty if someone has advanced, non-small cell lung cancer. The blood test can also determine lung cancer at an early stage with a 81% certainty. In the future patients have to undergo less biopsies and CT scans for the detection of lung cancer. Myron Best and Tom Würdinger, researchers of Cancer Center Amsterdam, publish on this breakthrough in the American magazine Cancer Cell. Read more.

ACS Biomarker, your partner in biomarker discovery and validation projects

ACS Biomarker is an AMC spin-off delivering biomarker validation services. Today, the majority of diagnostic tests is protein based. In recent years RNA has become increasingly popular for its diagnostic and prognostic properties in cancer, cardiovascular and many other diseases. The identification of novel RNA species opened up promising biomarker opportunities and could be the answer for the diagnostic challenges some diseases are still facing.

HvA and UN connect global cities to Global Goals Jam (15-16 September)

MediaLAB Amsterdam, affiliated with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), is organising the Global Goals Jam together with the United Nations (UN Development Program) on 15 and 16 September. During this two-day international event, creative designers and creators are working on a better world in 40 major cities. Under the motto “talking less and doing more”, numerous teams of students and companies will work together on ideas to help achieve global goals for a sustainable world. Read more.

 
Venturing with...Clocktimizer (21 September)

'Venturing with...' is a monthly talkshow where a startup can talk about their entrepreneurial lifestory: from idea to impact making startup. Guest on September 21 is Bram Fokke, CTO of Clocktimizer. Clocktimizer won the Legal Tech Startup Award with their idea that uses big-data in their business intelligence software for layers. Read more and registration.


 
Drug Development Course (4 October)

The discovery and development of a new drug is a highly complex process involving various scientific disciplines. Many scientific specialists contribute with essential information and know-how to drug discovery and development programs. In the day-to-day practice many people partly or indirectly involved in drug discovery and/or development have the desire to learn more about the roles of and the interplay between the scientific disciplines involved.

Amsterdam Data Science Coffee & Data offers the opportunity for researchers and business to share their knowledge and give insight on a central theme, specifically on Friday 6 October the theme will be HR Analytics. There is also a chance to have a cup of coffee and network with eachother.

Launch healthtech incubator program in Amsterdam (9 October)


Amsterdam health & technology institute (ahti) launches HealthInc – the incubator program for entrepreneurs in health and technology. The program will take place in the Amsterdam health & technology center, the health tech hub of Amsterdam, situated next to the Academic Medical Center (AMC). HealthInc is an intensive full-time incubator program for early stage health and technology entrepreneurs. During ten weeks, the participants will dive into the various aspects of developing and accelerating their venture. Read more and registration.

Breakfast workshops on valorisation
IXA is organising a new series of workshops in the form of breakfast sessions on various valorisation topics. The breakfast workshops are open to all scientists from AMC, HvA, UvA, VU, VUmc, NWO Institutes and KNAW. Participation is free of charge and breakfast will be served. What is valorisation and why is it relevant to my research? 
How do I make a start with valorisation?
I have an idea with societal or commercial potential but I don’t know how to take the first step to successfully valorise this idea.

In this workshop we will go through the entire valorisation process; from the starting point to the further development of the idea.

The next step in valorisation, Thursday 19 October (Venture Lab Humanities)
Generating ideas is not too difficult. To make your idea more concrete is usually more complicated. Which steps are to be taken? In this interactive workshop we show different models to develop your idea one step further: What are the benefits? Which problem will you solve for whom? And how do you organise your valorisation activities?

How to collaborate with external partners, Thursday 2 November (Science Park)
You have interesting research results or a great new idea, and you hope they can benefit society. To bring them to societal use, often a company has to take interest. In this workshop you will meet valorisation experts. They will give you an overview of what industry is looking for, and how you can prepare yourself to enter into dialogue with industry.

ERC awards Starting Grant to six UvA researchers
The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded Starting Grants to six researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA). A Starting Grant is a personal grant of about 1.5 million euros and gives talented researchers the opportunity to conduct research for a period of five years. Read more.
