Winners Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award
Paul Govaerts and Martine Coene win Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award

Paul Govaerts and Martine Coene of the VU University Amsterdam are this year’s winners of the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award, the annual award for innovative ideas from Amsterdam universities and research institutes. They received the award for their idea to restore hearing using cochlear implant programming. The winners received the prize of €10,000 on Wednesday, 27 May from jury chairman Alexander Rinnooy Kan. Runner Up prize
The Runner Up prize went to Nick Laan and Karla de Bruin of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Netherlands Forensic Institute for their innovative work to improve bloodstain pattern analysis in forensics.
 
Audience Award
The Audience Award was won by Jurre den Haan and Femke Bouwman of the VU University’s Alzheimer’s Centre in collaboration with LaserLab Amsterdam for a technique for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Eureka prize for documentary "I am Alice"

The makers of the documentary "I am Alice" have won the NWO-KNAW Eureka-award for Science Communication 2015. The number one question in the documentary about ‘socobot’ Alice is if a robot can build a human relationship with someone and thus replace a person of flesh and blood. Alice was developed by research group SELEMCA (including VU). The makers received the award for their outstanding contribution to enhancing the knowledge and involvement of the general public in science.

Neelie Kroes awarded 100K grants to 4 science-based startups




The Netherlands Special Envoy for startups Neelie Kroes visited ACE Venture Lab and met with tech and science startups. Ms. Kroes awarded 4 proof-of-concept grants to the university spin-offs and discussed how to improve the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Amsterdam universities.

Pontes Medical and its inventors in the "Telegraaf”

Swallowable micro robots that carry out operations. They can cut or laser, suture or inject into organs and tissues. Some robots already exists, you swallow them in a smooth pill and wait patiently. But a simple pair of pliers with a special tip for an unattainable spot in the patient? "No that is not available yet unfortunately..."

AMC well presented at the Venture Challenge 2015




BreathCloud and CysTmX were two of the selected candidates for the Venture Challenge 2015.
On June 4th, CysTmX and BreathCloud of AMC pitched together with 4 fellow Venture Challenge Teams during the SME Event organized by HollandBio. The Venture Challenge is a ‘must-do’ opportunity for all aspiring Life Sciences entrepreneurs, it is an excellent way to receive coaching and advice on essential elements of setting up a business, thereby paving the way for your future success.
BreathCloud: Providing on-the-spot diagnostic tools to determine patient specific treatment plans for obstructive lung disease.

ERC Advanced Grant for Matthijs Kalmijn and Teunis Geijtenbeek UvA. ERC Consolidator for Hein de Haas
Prof. Matthijs Kalmijn, professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and Prof. Teunis Geijtenbeek, professor of Molecular and Cellular Immunology (AMC-UvA), have been awarded the prestigious Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). Thanks to his appointment as professor of Sociology – with a particular focus on the study of migration and social cohesion – Prof. Hein de Haas is bringing the ERC Consolidator Grant, which was recently awarded to him, from the University of Oxford to the UvA. AUAS (HvA) to receive 3.5 million RAAK PRO subsidy


Over the next four years five AUAS (Dutch HvA) research proposals will be receiving RAAK PRO subsidy from the Taskforce for Applied Research (Dutch: SIA). This is a subsidy of a maximum of €700,000 per research project. With this subsidy, AUAS will carry out research into safe flying, intelligent charging facilities, forensic research, anti-bullying policy and the motor development of primary school children. Read more
